The basics
What UK data protection law asks of any organisation
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) lists seven principles for handling personal data under the UK GDPR: lawfulness, fairness and transparency; purpose limitation; data minimisation; accuracy; storage limitation; integrity and confidentiality; and accountability. Read the ICO’s guide to the data protection principles.
On security, the law does not prescribe fixed measures. It asks for a level of security that is appropriate to the risks of the processing. The ICO says staff need to understand why protecting personal data matters, and it suggests Cyber Essentials as a starting point for technical measures. Read the ICO’s guide to data security.
The seven principles
- Lawfulness, fairness and transparency
- Purpose limitation and data minimisation
- Accuracy and storage limitation
- Integrity and confidentiality (security)
- Accountability
Your rights
Your rights over your personal data
The ICO names eight individual rights: to be informed, of access, to rectification, to erasure, to restrict processing, to data portability, to object, and rights related to automated decision making, including profiling. Read the ICO’s guide to individual rights.
